Demurrage and fines: control in practice

Those who struggled with free time and fines explain what changed once the information arrived in time.

Can you control demurrage and fines without checking arrival and release by hand?

One of the most significant problems we had was fines. Not having exact control, especially of demurrage, and not quickly knowing when the cargo had arrived and been released by customs. It was a lot of manual work, many lookups and many typing errors, and the arrival and release dates were critical. When e.Mix came in, we started with automated Siscomex lookups and automated reports.”

Does the platform help avoid high storage and demurrage costs?

We recently had a shipment that would have cost R$203,000 in storage under the public rate table. Linked to the customer's own rate table, they would have paid R$2,300. With this tool we were able to avoid that kind of situation. Being able to avoid a R$200,000 bill makes all the difference.”

What is the financial impact of automating tracking?

Financially, it's sometimes hard to measure what we no longer had to pay, what we avoided. But e.Mix's platform improved processing time, which reduces operating costs, and also helped avoid very high costs and fines. It's hard to measure, but the impact is direct in those two areas.”

How do you avoid expensive storage from missing a deadline at the port?

One example is reassigning a container at the port: if you forget to reassign it and that cargo goes onto a public rate table, storage becomes absurdly expensive. The system has several locks and alerts that I configure: it alerts whoever has to make the request, alerts the second person in the chain who needs to follow up, and also alerts another team on standby in case the first one fails. Without the tool, I'd be taking a big risk.”
